Giorgio Brunello is Professor of Economics at Universita’ di Padova, Italy, and a research fellow of both CESifo and IZA. Formerly a professor at the universities of Osaka, Venice and Udine, he earned his Ms.C. in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE) and his Ph.D. in economics from Osaka University. Brunello has held visiting positions at the LSE and the Universities of Kyoto, Berkeley, Melbourne, Oxford and Boston, among several others. He is a Member of the Advisory Board of the Swiss Leading House “Economics of Education, Firm Behaviour and Training Policies”, Zurich. In 2008 he was short listed for the award on the best book of the year in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Princeton University, The Firestone Library, for the book “Education and Training in Europe”. Brunello was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Labour Economists (1997-2003) and served as a member of the editorial board of Labour Economics (1997-2006) and of Lavaro e Relazioni Industriali (1996-2000). Brunello has wide experience with previous work for the European Commission, having participated as discussant of the chapter “Education and employment: Relation of Fields and Paths of Study to Occupations” (2008), having served as Expert in the Thematic Review Seminar Measuring, improving and promoting effects of lifelong learning and having been the author of the report “The Effects of Training on Employment, Wages and Productivity: a European Perspective” (2007) and having been a discussant of the report “The Contribution of Human Capital to Economic Growth in Europe” (2004). Moreover he formerly participated in the Leonardo project REDIV on training and regional policies, the TSER project PURE on the economic returns to education in Europe and the research group on the labour market in the European service sector, and participated in the TSER project EDWIN on education and wage inequality in Europe. He worked on an Italian project on school vouchers and has been a consultant to projects on training in Italian firms and several projects on macroeconomics and the labour market in Italy.
His relevant publications count more than 50 articles, published in the European Economic Review, the Economic Journal, the Journal of Public Economic, the Economics of Education Review and many others, and cover topics in the economics of education as diverse as training systems, education and earnings, college decisions, stratified versus comprehensive designs of school systems, family background and school quality, educational choice and competition, education and unemployment, and elite schools. Several of his works adopt a cross-country European perspective, including work using the European Community Household Panel. On numerous occasions, Brunello has produced joint work with Professors Daniele Checchi and Simona Comi of the University of Milan and with Professor Claudio Lucifora of the Catholic University of Milan, which gives him further reach to education economists in Italy. Additional joint work was conducted with many further researchers from Italy and all over Europe. In geographical terms, Brunello will cover Italy and Malta for the network.
