Reinhilde Veugelers is Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven at the Faculty of Business and Economics in the Management, Strategy and Innovation Department. She holds a PhD in Economics from the Catholic University of Leuven. Reinhilde Veugelers is also a Senior Fellow of the BRUssels European and Global Economic Laboratory (Bruegel), a research fellow at the Centre of Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a member of Commissioner Potocnik’s Knowledge for Growth expert group. From 2004-2008, she was on academic leave, as advisor at the European Commission’s Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA). From 2007-2009, she served as the president of the European Association of Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE). She also served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Industrial Economics and currently is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organisation and member of the editorial board of Economic Policy. Veugelers comes up with both excellent academic expertise and a huge experience in policy advice, especially in a European context. She has held visiting positions at such distinguished universities as the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, the University of Paris, Sorbonne, the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) or the Stern Business School in New York. Her main research interests include the fields of industrial organisation, international economics strategy and innovation. As she combines research in industrial and innovation economics with the role of universities in the process of technology transfer, Veugelers is a special expert on issues on Higher Education, an area the network needs additional expertise. She has published in very prominent economic journals such as the American Economic Review, the European Economic Review, the European Journal of Political Economy, the International Journal of Industrial Organisation, Management Science and many others. Several book and journal contributions on the reform of the European university system corroborate her special expertise on Tertiary Education in Europe, including her editorship (together with Rick van der Ploeg) of a recent special issue of CESifo Economic Studies on “Towards Evidence-based Reform of European Universities.” She has participated in numerous research projects, many of them launched by the European Commission like Economic Change: Micro Foundations of Entrepreneurial and Organisational Change in Europe for DG Research. She is coordinator of the European Concerted Research Action COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), one of the longest-running European instruments supporting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe. She also served as an expert in several groups for DG Research and DG Enterprise. Geographically, Veugelers will cover Belgium.
