On the basis of EENEE’s Mandate to promote and disseminate economics of education in Europe, the Network members were commissioned by the European Commission to perform the following concrete tasks: mapping of expertise and organisations in the economics of education in Europe; organising European Symposia on Economics of Education; setting up and maintaining a website on Economics of Education in Europe; developing a proposal for a work programme on economics of education; assisting the Commission in drawing up specifications for studies, research projects, and statistical surveys; and providing guidance and advice on concrete questions of the Commission in the field of economics of education that emerge occasionally on an ad-hoc basis.
EENEE’s first task was to produce a catalogue of experts and centres of excellence in the economics of education. This catalogue helps to find out who is currently working in the field, particularly in Europe, but also in other important OECD countries. Undertaken in close co-operation between all members of the network, the detailed mapping of expertise and organisations on the economics of education in Europe provides information on the area of expertise and the main geographical coverage of the respective experts. The mapping outcome is freely searchable and publicly available in the EENEE Experts Database.
As a second task to build up and further the area of economics of education in Europe, the network will organise annual European Symposia on Economics of Education, on behalf of the Commission. These Symposia are dedicated to stimulate the exchange between policymakers and researchers. They aim to disseminate well-funded scientific knowledge on the economics of education in Europe to policymakers, as well as to highlight current shortcomings and gaps in the scientific research on the economics of education in Europe from a practical point of view. The Symposia can also facilitate the networking activities between the actors involved and further activities at the European level.
EENEE also set up and operates this website on Economics of Education in Europe on behalf of the Commission. The website, available under the domain www.educationeconomics.org, serves as its main vehicle for public relation, as well as a forum for interested researchers on the economics of education. The website serves mainly two purposes:
• www.educationeconomics.org disseminates and spreads existing knowledge on the economics of education to the interested public. As a first means to further this goal, the website contains a section with abundant general information on research in the economics of education. As a second means, the website also contains a the freely accessible and searchable EENEE Experts Database, which allows to easily identify the main experts and research centres in different countries and in different areas of expertise. • www.educationeconomics.org also serves as a discussion and exchange forum on the economics of education in Europe, in order to promote future research in the field. The EENEE Education Economists in Europe Database constitutes a platform for education economists to present their research interests and to get into contact with other researchers in the same field. The website will also present results of recent studies and trends in European economics of education. Together, this will help to further a European research area in the economics of education, increasingly connecting the community of European education economists.
The network also provides guidance and advice on concrete questions of the Commission in the field of economics of education emerging occasionally on an ad hoc basis. Thereby, the network will serve as a think tank on the economics of education for the European Commission, being of help when the European Commission is drafting policy documents, papers for meetings, or answers to consultations.
The network will prepare short analytical reportsin the field of economics of education on subjects to be decided by the European Commission.
